The project

How this Bothell bathroom came together

The goal

The photos show a bathroom that worked but looked tired: dark blue paint, a white molded tub surround, a white tile counter with a drop-in sink, a globe light bar and a patterned floor. The aim was a brighter room built around the same tub alcove and vanity wall.

The challenge

The room is narrow, with the vanity, toilet and tub in a line, so the layout stays as it is and every change has to come from the surfaces. A tiled surround also needs a properly waterproofed wall behind it, which a molded surround does not.

The solution

We removed the molded surround and covered the tub walls in a red waterproofing membrane before any tile went up, with a niche framed into the back wall. The alcove was then tiled in a white wave pattern tile, and the niche was lined in a gray and white hexagon mosaic. A gray shaker vanity with a white top and a brushed nickel faucet replaced the tile counter, a framed mirror and a three-light fixture went up under the skylight, and a gray plank floor now runs from the door to the tub. The dark blue walls were painted white.

The result

The room is now white and gray from end to end, and the skylight lights it instead of disappearing into dark walls.

Questions

Questions about this project

Can a molded tub surround be replaced with tile?

Yes. In this Bothell bathroom the molded surround came out and the walls were covered in a waterproofing membrane before the tile went on. That step is what keeps water out of the wall behind a tiled tub, and it is also when a recessed niche can be framed in.

How much did this project cost?
