Patterned Tile Tub Bathroom Remodel in Issaquah, WA

A second bathroom from the same 2021 Issaquah project, where we remodeled three bathrooms in one home. Here a curtained tub and an oak double vanity became a tub alcove wrapped in bold black and white patterned tile, a long white counter on dark cabinets, glass pendant lights and black framed mirrors under the skylight.

The project

How this Issaquah bathroom came together

The goal

This bathroom was part of a three bathroom remodel in the same Issaquah home. It is a long room under a skylight, with the vanity along one wall and the tub at the far end, and before the work it had an oak double vanity, drop-in sinks, a tub behind a curtain and a beige patterned floor.

The challenge

In a long, narrow room the far wall is the first thing you see from the door, and here that wall was a plain tub surround behind a curtain. The vanity wall had to stay where it was, so the change had to come from the finishes, the lighting and the tub end of the room.

The solution

We rebuilt the tub end around a white tub and covered all three walls above it in black and white patterned tile, with a recessed niche framed in black and black shower fixtures. Along the side wall the oak cabinets gave way to dark cabinets with a long white counter, a black faucet and black framed mirrors. Glass pendant lights hang over the counter, the skylight stays open above, and dark marble-look tile covers the floor from the door to the tub.

The result

The finished photos were taken on May 17, 2021. From the doorway the patterned tile now draws the eye straight to the end of the room, and the black fixtures, mirrors and trim repeat the dark color of the tile. It is one of three bathrooms we remodeled in this home; another is shown on the freestanding tub page linked below.

Questions

Questions about this project

Is patterned tile a good choice around a tub?

It can be, when the rest of the room stays quiet. In this Issaquah bathroom the black and white pattern covers all three tub walls, and the counter, cabinets and fixtures were kept to white and black so the tile reads as the one feature of the room.

How is a long, narrow bathroom like this one lit?

From three places. The skylight over the middle of the room was kept, glass pendant lights hang over the long counter, and the black framed mirrors bounce that light back across the room. The white counter and the white parts of the tile reflect it too, so the dark floor and cabinets do not make the room feel dim.

How much did this project cost?

About $35,000. Every project is priced in writing, line by line, for your home.
