The project

How this Renton bathroom came together

The goal

The aim was a small bathroom that works hard: a walk-in shower big enough to sit in, a vanity with closed storage and a floor with real character, all inside a room you can see end to end from the doorway.

The challenge

In a room this compact the shower, toilet and vanity share one narrow run, and the shower had to be easy to step into and safe to use. With so little floor, every surface is on view from the door, so the tile choices carry the whole design.

The solution

We built a walk-in shower across the end of the room in large marble-look subway tile, with a recessed niche lined in pebble mosaic, a tiled corner bench, a grab bar, a handheld shower on a slide bar and a pebble mosaic floor behind a low marble-look curb. The same wall tile continues past the shower as wainscot. A navy and white star pattern tile covers the main floor. A gray vanity with a white quartz-look top and an undermount sink sits under a backlit LED mirror, with a one-piece toilet beside it and a square ceiling light and fan above.

The result

The patterned floor now gives the small room its personality, and the shower offers a bench, a grab bar and a handheld head in a very compact room.

Questions

Questions about this project

Can a small bathroom have a walk-in shower with a bench?

Yes. In this Renton bathroom the shower spans the end of the room and still fits a tiled corner bench, a recessed niche and a grab bar. A handheld shower on a slide bar makes it easy to use while seated.

Does a patterned floor tile make a small bathroom feel smaller?

Not when the walls stay calm. Here the navy and white star pattern is the only bold surface, and the white and gray marble-look tile on the walls keeps the room bright, so the floor reads as a feature rather than clutter.

How much did this project cost?
