Master Bathroom Remodel with a Subway Tile Walk-In Shower

We took this master bathroom down to the studs in June 2022 and had it finished by early August. The new walk-in shower is lined in white subway tile laid vertically, with a mosaic stripe, a recessed niche, a penny tile floor and a glass panel on a ceiling rail. Opposite it, a long espresso double vanity with a white top runs under a wide mirror, and gray wood-look plank tile covers the floor.

The project

How this master bathroom came together

The goal

The plan called for a real walk-in shower and room for two at the sink. The old room had a skylight worth keeping, but its walls, plumbing and floor all needed to be replaced to get there.

The challenge

Getting a walk-in shower and a full double vanity into the same long room meant new supply lines throughout, and once the old finishes came off, the walls and the shower alcove were open to the framing. Everything had to be rebuilt in order: plumbing, then walls, then tile.

The solution

Demolition in mid June 2022 took the room back to studs and subfloor. New plumbing was roughed in along the vanity wall and in the shower, then the shower was boarded for tile and the room walls were patched and taped. By mid July the shower walls were going up in white subway tile laid vertically, with a gray mosaic stripe running floor to ceiling and a recessed niche between the rain head and a handheld shower on a slide bar. The floor is penny tile, edged in white where it meets the room, and a glass panel hangs from a ceiling rail. On the other wall, a long espresso double vanity with a white top sits under one wide mirror and a light bar, and gray wood-look plank tile runs throughout.

The result

Our photos run from demolition on June 14 to the finished room on August 4, 2022. The vertical tile makes the shower feel taller, the skylight now lights white surfaces instead of tired ones, and the double vanity gives two people their own sink. The bathroom down the hall in the same home was photographed finished the same day.

Questions

Questions about this project

Why lay subway tile vertically?

Laid vertically, the long tiles draw the eye up, which makes a shower feel taller. In this master bath the vertical white tile is paired with a gray mosaic stripe that runs floor to ceiling.

What order does a master bathroom rebuild go in?

Here it ran demolition to the studs, plumbing rough-in, new backer board and drywall, then tile, then the vanity, mirror and fixtures. Our photos show each stage from June 14 to August 4, 2022.
