Gray Subway Tile Bathroom Remodel

This full bathroom was finished in February 2023 around a new tub and shower wrapped in gray glossy subway tile. Matte black fixtures, from the round rain head to the faucet and towel bar, stand out against the tile and white walls, and a black hexagon floor ties them together. A gray vanity with an integrated white top and black floating shelves finish the room.

The project

How this gray subway tile bathroom came together

The goal

The aim was a full bathroom that felt crisp and modern without going all white: a tub with a shower over it, color on the walls from the tile itself, and fixtures that read as one set from the door.

The challenge

The room is compact, with the tub under a window at the far end, the toilet beside it and the vanity along the wall by the door. Tile had to wrap the tub area and run up to the ceiling while working around that window, and storage had to come from somewhere other than a large cabinet.

The solution

Gray glossy subway tile was laid in a running bond around the tub and up to the ceiling, with a recessed niche set into the tile and the window opening finished in white. Matte black fixtures went in throughout: a round rain head on a slide bar, the tub spout and valve, the shower rod, the vanity faucet and the towel hardware. On the floor, black hexagon tile runs from the door to the tub. A gray vanity with an integrated white top sits under a frameless mirror and a black bar light, and two black metal floating shelves above the toilet add open storage.

The result

The finished room, photographed on February 7 and 9, 2023, uses a small palette well: gray tile, white walls and fixtures in matte black, grounded by the dark hexagon floor. The window above the tub keeps it bright, and the shelves and niche give it storage without crowding the space. Seen from the hallway, the dark floor and gray tile frame the doorway at the end of the new plank floor.

Questions

Questions about this project

Do matte black fixtures work with gray tile?

Yes. In this bathroom every fixture is matte black, from the rain head and tub valve to the faucet, towel bar and shelves, and a black hexagon floor repeats the color, so the gray subway tile reads as the backdrop.

Can a small bathroom have open storage instead of a big cabinet?

It can. Here a recessed niche in the shower and two black metal floating shelves above the toilet hold everyday items, so the vanity could stay compact and the room keeps its clear floor.
