Wood-Look Plank Flooring Remodel

One warm, dark wood-look plank floor now runs through this home, photographed finished in January and February 2023. It starts in the bedrooms, follows the hallway past the bathroom and opens into the living room and a white kitchen, with no change of floor between rooms. White baseboards and door casings frame it throughout, and at the end of the hall it meets the black hexagon tile of a bathroom that was remodeled in the same house, photographed the same afternoon.

The project

How this plank floor came together

The goal

The idea was simple: one floor for the whole living level, warm enough to balance white walls and a white kitchen, and laid so that you can walk from a bedroom to the kitchen without crossing a single transition strip.

The challenge

The layout has a long central hallway with doors on both sides, an arched opening into the living room and a kitchen with cabinets on two walls. Each of those openings is a place where a floor can look pieced together, and the bathroom doorway needed a clean stop against the tile.

The solution

We laid the planks lengthwise down the hallway so the run carries the eye through the house, and continued the same direction into the bedrooms, the living room and the kitchen. The floor runs tight to the kitchen cabinet bases and stops neatly at the bathroom door against the black hexagon tile. White baseboards and door casings finish the edges along every wall, so each opening has a crisp white frame against the brown planks.

The result

In the photos from January 27 and February 9, 2023 the floor reads as one surface from the bedrooms to the back of the kitchen. Its warm brown tone gives the white kitchen and pale walls some contrast, and the long hallway now looks deliberate instead of narrow. The earliest photos, from January 27, already show the bedrooms furnished and in use on the new floor, and by February 9 the kitchen, living room and hallway were finished too, including the hall doorways with their white casing.

Questions

Questions about this project

Which way should plank flooring run through a house?

Usually along the longest sight line. In this home the planks run down the length of the central hallway and keep that direction into every room, which makes the hall look longer and the house more connected.

Can one floor run through the kitchen and bedrooms?

Yes. Here the same wood-look plank covers the bedrooms, hallway, living room and kitchen, and only changes at the bathroom door, where it meets the tile with a clean edge.

How much did this project cost?

About $10,000. Every project is priced in writing, line by line, for your home.

How do I get a price for new flooring like this?
