Walk-In Shower Remodel in Renton, WA

This Renton project replaced one shower in a primary bathroom and left the rest of the room alone. The old enclosure came out on day two, the new walls and floor were tiled within a week, and the shower was usable by April 14, 2023. A frameless glass door finished it in May. The jetted tub, vanity and floor beside it stayed as they were.

The project

How this Renton shower came together

The goal

The homeowners wanted a new walk-in shower without remodeling the whole bathroom. The jetted tub, the vanity and the floor tile around them were staying, so the work had to stop at the shower walls.

The challenge

Replacing a shower in a finished room means working next to surfaces that are meant to survive. The old enclosure had to come out cleanly, the new waterproofing had to tie into the same opening, and the new tile had to meet the existing floor and wall paint without patching beyond the shower.

The solution

Demolition was done by April 4. The alcove was taken down to the studs, rebuilt with waterproof board and a sloped pan, and the seams sealed before any tile went up. A light hexagon mosaic went on the floor around a square drain, and light gray plank tile runs from the curb to the ceiling, with a tall recessed niche on the side wall for bottles. Chrome valve trim and a shower head went on last. The glass was measured after the tile was finished, and a frameless hinged door was installed in May.

The result

The tile was finished by April 10 and the shower was complete on April 14, 2023, about two weeks after the start. The new shower reads as part of the room: the tub, the vanity and the floor around it are unchanged, and only the shower itself is new.

Questions

Questions about this project

Can you replace just the shower and keep the rest of the bathroom?

Yes. On this Renton job only the shower was rebuilt. The jetted tub, vanity and floor beside it stayed in place, and the new tile and glass were fitted to the existing opening.

Why was the glass door installed weeks after the tile?

Frameless glass is cut to the finished tile, so it is measured once the walls and curb are done. Here the tile was finished on April 10, and the door was ordered and fitted in May.

How much did this project cost?

About $15,000. It took about two weeks, from April 3 to April 14, 2023, with the glass door fitted in May. Every project is priced in writing, line by line, for your home.

How do I get a price for a shower remodel like this one?

Book a consultation. We look at the shower and what has to stay around it, and send a written, itemized price before work starts. Our guide Cost of a Bathroom Remodel in the Greater Seattle Area explains what moves the number.
