Condo Kitchen Refresh in Renton, WA

This Renton condo kitchen was refreshed in 2024 as part of a remodel of the whole unit. Rather than replacing sound cabinets and granite, the work went into the shell around them: a new luxury vinyl plank floor from the kitchen into the dining and living areas, fresh paint, and updated electrical. The result is a kitchen that finally matches the rest of the home.

The project

How this Renton condo kitchen came together

The goal

The kitchen cabinets, dark granite counters and white tile backsplash were in good shape, so the plan for this room was not to tear them out. The goal was to make the kitchen and the dining corner beside it feel as new as the rest of the unit, which was being remodeled at the same time.

The challenge

A galley kitchen in a condo is narrow, and its floor has to meet the entry, the dining corner and the living room without a step or a seam. The new floor also had to run tight to cabinet bases and appliances that were staying in place, and the electrical work had to happen around finished cabinetry.

The solution

We protected the cabinets and counters, completed the electrical work, and painted the kitchen with the rest of the unit. Then the luxury vinyl plank went down as one continuous floor: through the galley, past the pass-through counter, into the dining corner and on into the living room and bedrooms. The appliances went back into their places on the new floor. Fresh paint on the walls and ceiling finished the room.

The result

The finished kitchen, photographed on September 5, 2024, keeps its warm wood cabinets and dark granite, now set against pale walls and a light plank floor. From the living room the pass-through counter frames the kitchen, and the dining area by the front door shares the same floor, so the whole front of the condo reads as one open space. Keeping the cabinets meant the work in this room came down to the floor, the paint and the electrical, while the bigger rebuilds in this condo went into the two bathrooms.

Questions

Questions about this project

Do I have to replace my cabinets to update a kitchen?

No. In this Renton condo the cabinets, granite and backsplash were sound, so they stayed. A new floor, paint and electrical work changed how the room looks and feels for far less disruption than a full tear out.

Can new flooring go in without removing the kitchen cabinets?

Yes. Here the luxury vinyl plank was laid up to the existing cabinet bases and the appliances were set back in place on top of it, so the kitchen, dining area and living room now share one continuous floor.

How much did this project cost?
