White Kitchen with Laundry Nook in Shoreline, WA

We rebuilt this Shoreline kitchen in 2022, turning a room of open shelving and rolling carts into a full U of white shaker cabinets. The washer and dryer now sit in their own nook at the end of the counter run, a farmhouse sink sits under the window, and a wide opening with a peninsula connects the kitchen to the living room. A beam and new plumbing were added under change orders along the way.

The project

How this Shoreline kitchen came together

The goal

The old kitchen had almost no built-in cabinets. Food and dishes lived on open shelves and a rolling cart, and the washer stood out on an open wall. The owners wanted real storage, a better connection to the living room, and the laundry tucked out of sight.

The challenge

The scope grew once the work was under way: one change order added a beam and another added a repipe of the water lines. The laundry also had to fit inside the cabinet layout without crowding the sink.

The solution

A design layout was approved before the build. The beam went in, the water lines were repiped, and then we wrapped the room in white shaker base and wall cabinets. The washer and dryer went into a nook at the end of the sink run, under a small window, with cabinets above. A farmhouse sink and dishwasher sit under the main windows, a stainless range sits under a chimney hood on the opposite wall, and a white peninsula marks the edge of the kitchen at the new opening. Tall cabinets beside the refrigerator add pantry space.

The result

The before photos were taken in May 2022 and the finished kitchen was photographed in December 2022. The kitchen now has cabinets on every wall, the laundry sits inside the cabinet run, and the living room is visible from the sink.

Questions

Questions about this project

Can a washer and dryer go inside the kitchen cabinets?

Yes, when the plumbing, drain and dryer vent can reach the spot. In this Shoreline kitchen the washer and dryer sit side by side in a nook at the end of the sink run, with cabinets above them, and the water lines were repiped during the same job.

What is a change order, and why did this project have two?

A change order is a written addition to the contract when the scope changes. Here one added a beam and one added a repipe of the water lines, each written up as its own addition to the agreement.

How much did this project cost?

About $70,000. Every project is priced in writing, line by line, for your home.
