Navy and White Powder Room Remodel

This small powder room was made over in 2023 with a bold two-tone wall: deep navy paint above white board and batten wainscoting that runs around the room at chair rail height. A rustic wood vanity with an X-brace side and an open shelf, a light stone-look top and a black framed mirror sit under a three-globe glass light, all on a light wood floor.

The project

How this powder room came together

The goal

A powder room is small enough to take a bold color, and that was the idea here: give a plain half bath real character with paint, millwork and furniture-style fixtures rather than with tile.

The challenge

The room is compact, with a window over the vanity wall and the door close by, so every piece had to be in proportion. Dark paint can also make a small room feel closed in if it runs floor to ceiling, and the vanity had to fit beside the window without blocking it.

The solution

White board and batten wainscoting was run around the room at chair rail height, with a cap rail on top, so the lower half stays bright and the deep navy paint is kept to the upper walls. A rustic wood vanity with an X-brace side and an open shelf below brings warmth and keeps the floor visible under it. On top sits a light stone-look counter with a matte black faucet, under a black framed mirror and a three-globe glass light. The window and door trim were finished in white to match the wainscoting.

The result

In the photos from July 6, 2023 the room reads as one design: navy and white walls, warm wood, black metal and clear glass, over a light wood floor. The white wainscoting keeps it bright by the window, and the dark upper walls make the vanity and mirror stand out. It is a small project, but it shows how much a room can change through millwork, paint and a few well chosen pieces: a furniture-style vanity, a framed mirror and a statement light over the sink.

Questions

Questions about this project

Is dark paint a good idea in a small bathroom?

It can be, if it is balanced. In this powder room the navy is kept to the upper walls and white board and batten wainscoting covers the lower half, so the room stays bright while the color gives it character.

What is board and batten wainscoting?

Flat panels divided by vertical battens, capped with a rail. Here it is painted white and runs around the room at chair rail height, turning the corners and meeting the window and door trim.
