Home Office Cabinet Refinish in Sammamish, WA

In this Sammamish home office, the built-ins stayed and the color changed. A long run of stained wood base cabinets and the tall bookcase above them were refinished white in 2022, and the dark panels on the lower walls became white wainscot. The same furniture went back in, and the room now feels larger and much lighter without a single cabinet being replaced.

The project

How this Sammamish office came together

The goal

The office had solid built-ins: a long run of base cabinets with a counter and a tall bookcase above them. What it did not have was light. The stained wood, the dark lower wall panels and the heavy desk made the room feel closed in. The goal was to keep the built-ins and change how the room felt, working with what was already there instead of tearing it out.

The challenge

Refinishing cabinets in place is detail work. Every door, panel and shelf edge has to be prepared so the new white finish bonds and stays even, and the room has to be emptied first, so the office was cleared out in early September 2022.

The solution

This work was part of the larger project in the same house, and the cabinet refinish was added by written change order. The stained base cabinets and the bookcase were refinished white, and the lower walls were finished as white raised-panel wainscot under the chair rail, carried around the room to the window wall and the double doors.

The result

By mid September 2022 the desk, chairs, books and photos were back in a room that is bright from the floor up. The cabinets and bookcase are the same pieces, in the same place, with the same storage, and they now match the white trim and doors around them. Keeping the built-ins also meant no new cabinet boxes, no new counter and no gap in the wall while anything was rebuilt.

Questions

Questions about this project

Is refinishing built-in cabinets an alternative to replacing them?

When the boxes and doors are sound, often yes. In this office the cabinets and bookcase stayed exactly where they were and only the finish changed, from stained wood to white, so the storage and layout did not change at all.

Does the room have to be emptied for a cabinet refinish?

For a clean finish, yes. This office was cleared of its desk, chairs and books while the cabinets and wall panels were done, and everything went back in once the finish was complete.

How much did this project cost?

About $8,000. Every project is priced in writing, line by line, for your home.
