Bedroom Remodel with Brick Accent Wall in Edmonds, WA

In this Edmonds bedroom, dark blue textured walls were skim coated smooth and painted white in 2021, and the brick inside the arched alcove was opened up as a feature wall. The arched wood doors, the stained trim, the coffered ceiling and the arched front window were all kept, so the room looks brighter without losing its character. It was part of the same home remodel as the Edmonds kitchen.

The project

How this Edmonds bedroom changed

The goal

The bedroom had strong original details, including arched wood doors, an arched front window and a coffered ceiling, but heavy dark blue textured walls made it feel smaller and darker than it was. The aim was a calm, bright room that showed those details off.

The challenge

The texture on the walls was deep, so paint alone would not have given a smooth finish. The wood doors, the stained trim around the windows and the floor all had to survive the work untouched, and the brick behind the arch had to be uncovered cleanly.

The solution

The doors, window trim and floor were masked in plastic and paper. The blue texture was skim coated in layers of joint compound until the walls were flat, then sanded and painted white. The front window wall was coated the same way, with the window masked. At the arched alcove, the covering was taken off to show the brick behind it, and the edges of the arch were finished square around the brick.

The result

The room is now white from floor to ceiling, which lets the stained wood and the red brick stand out. Light from the front window reaches the whole floor, and the arched doors, ceiling fan and coffered ceiling are exactly where they were.

Questions

Questions about this project

Can heavy wall texture be made smooth without new drywall?

In this room it was. The textured walls were skim coated with joint compound in layers, sanded flat and painted. Whether skim coating or new drywall is the better choice depends on the wall, and we check that on site.

Were the original doors and trim replaced?

No. The arched wood doors, the stained window trim and the coffered ceiling were masked and kept. The photos before and after show them in the same place.

Was this bedroom part of a bigger project?

Yes. It was done under the same home remodel as the kitchen in this Edmonds house, which was gutted and opened to the dining room the same summer. Both rooms were photographed before work started on the same day in July 2021, and one crew moved between them.

How much did this project cost?

About $5,000. Every project is priced in writing, line by line, for your home.
