Finished Basement Remodel in Seattle, WA

This Seattle basement in an older home was already partly finished when the owner called us in late 2023. It still lacked closets and a proper floor, and the goal was a lower level the household could really live in. Completed in July 2024, it now has new closets, one light oak-look plank floor from the stairs to the back wall, white walls and trim, and room for a wet bar, an office corner and the laundry under the stairs. Behind glass-paned French doors, the bedroom side is now a main bedroom suite with a clothes closet and a storage closet.

The project

How this Seattle basement came together

The goal

The owners had recently moved into an older Seattle home whose basement had been finished by a previous owner, all but the closets and the floor. They wanted to use it as a main bedroom level, which meant real closets for clothes and storage and a floor that made the whole level feel finished.

The challenge

A basement shared by sleeping, working, laundry and a wet bar has to work for all of them at once. Storage had to be added without shrinking the rooms, and one floor had to run through every space, up to the stairs and around the bar and laundry.

The solution

The contract was signed in November 2023 and the job ran into the following summer. Closets went in along the hall and in the bedroom, with sliding and bifold doors that keep the walkways clear. A light oak-look plank floor was laid through the whole level, from the bottom stair to the back wall, finished with white baseboards. Glass-paned French doors close off the bedroom side, and the open room keeps the wet bar, an office corner and the laundry beside the stairs.

The result

The basement was completed at the end of July 2024. The level now reads as one bright, finished floor of the house, and the bedroom suite on the other side of the French doors is a real main bedroom: closets on both sides, a bed under two high windows and its own doors.

Questions

Questions about this project

Can you finish a basement someone else started?

Yes. This basement had been finished by a previous owner except for the closets and the floor. We added the closets and laid one new floor through the whole level, so the old and new work now read as one.

Can a basement be a main bedroom level?

It can, when it has the storage and finishes to match the rest of the house. Here that meant new clothes and storage closets, a continuous floor and a bedroom side that closes off behind glass French doors.

How do you separate a basement bedroom from the rest of the level?

Here, glass-paned French doors close the bedroom side off from the open room with the wet bar and laundry. They give privacy and quiet while still letting daylight from the bedroom windows through.

How much did this project cost?

About $120,000. Every project is priced in writing, line by line, for your home.
