Guest Bathroom Remodel with a Pebble Shower Floor

In this guest bathroom, a walk-in shower lined in large marble-look tile now fills the back of the room, with a pebble mosaic floor and a recessed niche backed in the same pebble. A dark wood vanity with a light stone-look top and a wood-look plank tile floor finish the space, and the hardware throughout is a dark finish that matches the shower trim.

How this guest bathroom came together

The goal

A guest bathroom has to be easy for anyone to use and simple to keep clean. The plan for this room centered on a walk-in shower that guests can step into, finishes that hide everyday water spots, and a vanity with enough storage that the counter can stay clear.

The challenge

The room is narrow, with the toilet, the vanity and the shower all sharing one run of floor. Every piece had to fit without crowding the doorway, and the shower had to read as part of the room rather than a closed box at the end of it.

The solution

We tiled the shower walls to the ceiling in large marble-look tile laid in a running pattern, so there are fewer grout lines to clean. The shower floor is a pebble mosaic, which gives bare feet more grip than a large tile would, and the same pebble backs the recessed niche in the back wall. A tiled curb in the marble-look tile marks the edge of the shower. The fixtures are a dark finish: a handheld shower on a slide bar with its hose, and a single valve on the side wall. Outside the shower, wood-look plank tile runs the length of the floor. The vanity is dark wood with a light stone-look top and an undermount sink, paired with a dark faucet, a mirrored cabinet above it and a white wall cabinet over the toilet for extra storage.

The result

The finished room keeps a light, open look even though it is narrow: the pale wall tile carries the eye to the back of the shower, and the warm floor and dark vanity keep it from feeling cold. Guests get a shower they can walk into, a handheld spray that is easy to aim, a niche for bottles and a vanity with drawers and a cabinet below.

Questions

Questions about this project

Why use pebble tile on a shower floor?

Small pebble mosaic has many grout joints, which gives bare feet more grip on a wet floor than a large tile. It also follows the slope to the drain easily. In this shower the same pebble backs the niche, so the floor and the niche match.

Does a guest bathroom need a walk-in shower?

Not always, but it suits guests of every age. Here the walk-in shower has a low tiled curb and a handheld spray on a slide bar, so it is easy to step into and the spray is easy to aim.
