The project

How this Bothell driveway was replaced

The goal

The concrete driveway in front of the garage had cracked across its panels and was breaking up at the edges. The aim was a new, sound driveway from the garage door down to the asphalt apron, that looks as clean as the rest of the front of the house.

The challenge

The old slab had to come out without damaging the garage, the brick and siding beside it, the landscaped beds on both sides or the asphalt that stays. That means breaking it out in pieces, hauling it away and leaving a firm base to pour on, all in the one area the household uses to get in and out.

The solution

On April 22, 2020 the cracked concrete was broken out in sections, starting at the garage, and by April 26 the whole area was cleared down to the base. The new driveway was then formed and poured as one slab between the asphalt on either side, finished with a broom texture for grip and cut with straight tooled control joints that divide it into even panels.

The result

By May 6, 2020, about two weeks after the first photos, the new driveway was in. It reads as a clean, light gray slab with neat joints from the garage door to the street side apron, framed by the shrubs and retaining wall, and the cracked old surface is gone. Because only the concrete was replaced, the asphalt apron and the landscaping on both sides stayed as they were, which kept the job to the area that actually needed it.

Questions

Questions about this project

What are the lines cut across a new concrete driveway?

They are control joints. Concrete shrinks as it cures, and the joints give it a planned place to crack, in a straight line inside the groove, instead of across the middle of a panel. This driveway has them tooled in an even grid, which also gives the slab a tidy, finished look from the street.

Can you replace a concrete driveway and keep the asphalt beside it?

Yes. On this Bothell job only the concrete slab in front of the garage was broken out and replaced, and the new driveway was poured between the existing asphalt on both sides.

How much did this project cost?

About $15,000. Every project is priced in writing, line by line, for your home.

How do I get a price for a new concrete driveway?
