Concrete Patio and Walkway Replacement Under a Deck
The old exposed aggregate patio under this upper deck was broken out in June 2021 and replaced with a new, larger concrete patio, a walkway along the side of the house and another leading out to the lawn. The new slab fills the space between the deck posts and reaches the house wall. The job photos run from May 17 to June 11, 2021.

How this patio under a deck came together
The goal
The space under the upper deck had an old exposed aggregate patio that stopped short of the house, and the side of the house had only a narrow path. The aim was a bigger, cleaner patio under the deck, sheltered by the deck above, with solid walkways connecting it to the side of the house and out to the lawn.
The challenge
The old slab had to be broken out and the new patio poured around the existing deck posts without disturbing them, which leaves little room to dig, set forms and move concrete. The walkways also had to meet the patio, the house wall and the river rock beds at clean edges.
The solution
By June 3, 2021 the old patio was broken out and the ground under the deck dug out between the posts. The next day wood forms went in around the patio and along the walkways, a base was raked level, and a rebar grid was laid across the patio area. On June 7 the crew placed the concrete, worked it in around every post, and gave the surfaces a broom finish with tooled joints. The river rock beds and stepping stones were left in place at the edges.
The result
By June 11, 2021, about four weeks after the first photos, the patio and walkways were finished. The area under the deck is now one level concrete floor from the posts to the house wall, the side path is a wide, firm walkway, and a second walk leads from the lawn straight onto the patio. The deck above gives the new patio cover, so it is usable in more weather.

Questions about this project
Can you pour a concrete patio under an existing deck?
Yes. Here the old patio was broken out and the ground dug out between the deck posts, forms and a rebar grid were set, and the concrete was placed and finished around each post without taking the deck down.
Why put rebar in a patio slab?
Rebar ties the slab together, so if it cracks the pieces stay level with each other. The grid was laid across the patio area on June 4, 2021, before the pour.
How much did this project cost?
