Side Yard Concrete Walkway and Pad

We poured a new concrete walkway and a wider pad along the side of this house in July 2021, as part of the same yard job as a new wood fence and gate. The walk runs between a block planter and a tall hedge and through the new gate, and the pad gives the side of the house a clean, level floor by the AC unit. Both have a broom finish.

The project

How this side yard concrete came together

The goal

The side of this house runs between a block planter, a tall hedge and the siding, with round stepping stones in the soil. The yard was getting a new fence and gate in the same job, and the path through that gate needed a firm, clean surface, along with a level area beside the house for the AC unit and everyday use.

The challenge

The new gate posts went in before the concrete, so the walk had to be poured tight around them while they were still braced. The forms also had to follow the edge of the block planter on one side and the hedge on the other, and the side pad had to meet the house wall and a stone border cleanly.

The solution

Wood form boards were set along the planter, the hedge line and the house, and the walk and the pad were poured on July 31, 2021. The concrete was worked right up to the braced gate posts, so the posts stand in the finished walk, and both surfaces were given a broom finish for grip. The pad was poured and finished on the same day.

The result

The side yard now has a continuous concrete path from the front of the house, through the gate and along the side, with a level pad beside the house by the AC unit. Once cured, the walk sits neatly between the planter, the hedge and the stepping stones, with the gate stained to match. Because the walk and the fence were planned as one job, the path, the posts and the gate line up with each other instead of being fitted around one another later.

Questions

Questions about this project

Should fence posts go in before or after a concrete walkway?

On this job the gate posts were set and braced first, and the walk was poured around them. That way the posts stand in the finished concrete and the gate lines up with the path.

Why give a walkway a broom finish?

The broom drags light lines across the surface while the concrete is still soft. It gives better grip in wet weather than a smooth trowel finish, which matters on a shaded side yard walk like this one, where the hedge keeps the surface damp for longer after rain.

How much did this project cost?

About $5,000. Every project is priced in writing, line by line, for your home.
