Asphalt Shingle Roof Repair on a House and Garage

We repaired the roofs on this house and its detached garage, both in gray asphalt shingles. Drone photos from September 2023 show the finished roofs from straight above. You can see the ridge lines, the two skylights on the front slope, the row of roof vents and the chimney cap, all sitting flat and even across the main roof. The second, higher photo shows the same roof in its neighborhood.

The project

How this roof repair came together

The goal

A roof repair has one job: a roof that sheds water everywhere again. Here that meant the main house roof, which has several slopes meeting at ridges and valleys, plus the separate garage roof at the back of the lot.

The challenge

The main roof is not a simple gable. It has a hip, valleys where slopes meet, two skylights on the front slope, a chimney and a row of vents, and every one of those is a place where water can find its way in if the shingles and flashing around it are not right. From the ground, most of that cannot even be seen.

The solution

The repair was done in gray asphalt shingles, the same material on the house and the garage, so the roofs read as one. Once the work was done, the roof was photographed from a drone, which shows every slope, ridge and penetration in one frame instead of a few close shots from a ladder.

The result

The aerial photos show shingle courses running straight across each slope, ridge caps finished along the hips, and the skylights, vents and chimney cap set into an even field of gray. Seen from above, both roofs look like one consistent job. The wider photo puts the house in context: an even gray roof among the neighboring roofs, yards and trees on the block, with the back deck and the garage behind it.

Questions

Questions about this project

Why photograph a finished roof with a drone?

A drone sees the whole roof at once: every slope, ridge, valley, skylight and vent. On this job the straight down view shows both the house and the garage roofs in one picture, which a ladder photo cannot do.

Which parts of a roof need the most care in a repair?

The places where the roof is interrupted. On this house that means the two skylights, the chimney, the vents and the valleys where slopes meet, because that is where water gets in first when shingles or flashing fail.

Should a detached garage roof match the house roof?

It does not have to, but it looks better when it does. On this property the house and the detached garage are both in gray asphalt shingles, so from the street or from above they read as one place instead of two buildings from different decades.

How much did this project cost?

About $15,000. Every project is priced in writing, line by line, for your home.
