White Kitchen with Bay Window Seat in Snohomish, WA

This Snohomish kitchen traded its honey oak cabinets for white shaker cabinets in March 2020, and the empty bay window at the end of the room became a built-in seat with storage under a hinged lid. The new kitchen has white veined counters, a gray glass mosaic backsplash, a tall pantry wall around the refrigerator and a warm wood-look plank floor. Our photos run from demolition on March 8 to the finished room on March 31.

How this Snohomish kitchen came together

The goal

The kitchen had honey oak cabinets, a black range and a bay window that held nothing but a floor vent. The plan was a bright white kitchen with more closed storage, and a reason to sit in that window.

The challenge

The room is long and narrow, with the refrigerator on one wall, the sink in an L under a window and the bay at the far end. New cabinets had to add storage without closing the room in, and the window seat had to fit the angled bay while leaving the floor vent in front of it clear.

The solution

The old cabinets came out on the first day. White shaker base and wall cabinets went in along the L, and a wall of tall pantry cabinets was built around the refrigerator so it sits flush with the storage beside it. In the bay, we built a paneled seat across the full width of the window with a hinged lid, so the inside is one large storage box. The cabinet runs and the pantry wall were going in by March 20, and by March 30 the counters were in and the refrigerator was back in place. White veined counters went on at the end of March, then a stainless undermount sink, a new faucet and a gray glass mosaic backsplash. Recessed lights replaced the old ceiling fixtures.

The result

The first photo is dated March 8, 2020 and the finished kitchen was photographed on March 31, 2020. The kitchen is white from end to end, the refrigerator wall doubles as a pantry, and the bay window is now a seat with storage that looks out over the yard.

Questions

Questions about this project

Can a bay window seat have storage inside it?

Yes. This one is a paneled box built across the bay with a hinged lid on top, so the whole seat opens for storage. It stops short of the floor vent in the bay, so the vent stays open in front of the seat.

How long did this Snohomish kitchen take?

Our dated photos run from March 8, 2020, when the old cabinets were coming out, to March 31, 2020, when the finished kitchen was photographed. That is the photo record, not a measured schedule.

How much did this project cost?
