Spa Master Bathroom with a Stacked Stone Shower Wall

A white freestanding tub now sits beside a walk-in shower in this master bathroom, set against a stacked stone accent wall that runs from the tub to the shower. The shower has dark fixtures, a recessed niche and a corner glass enclosure, and large light gray tile covers the floor under a skylight, out to a long L-shaped double vanity.

How this spa master bathroom came together

The goal

A spa bathroom is about a long soak and a shower that feels generous. This room was set up for both: a freestanding tub with space around it, a walk-in shower beside it, and one natural texture that ties the two together.

The challenge

The tub and the shower share one end of the room, under a window on one side and a skylight above. The shower needed to be enclosed without closing off the light, and the tub needed to stand on its own without crowding the shower entry.

The solution

We built a stacked stone accent wall in warm, linear stone-look tile that runs behind the tub and continues as the back wall of the shower, so the two areas read as one feature. The rest of the shower is tiled in a smooth cream tile, with a recessed niche, a rain head on a wall arm, a handheld spray on a slide bar and the valve, all in a dark bronze tone. A low tiled half wall with a stone cap separates the tub from the shower and doubles as a ledge for towels. The shower is enclosed with frameless corner glass and dark hardware, so light from the window and the skylight reaches every corner. The white freestanding tub stands on its own beside the half wall, filled by a matching dark floor-mounted spout. Large light gray tile covers the floor of the whole room, out to the long L-shaped double vanity with white tops and two sinks.

The result

The finished bathroom feels bright and calm, with the stacked stone wall as its focal point. The tub has room around it for a real soak, the shower is open to the light behind clear glass, and the dark fixtures repeat from the tub filler to the shower to the vanity faucets.

Questions

Questions about this project

What makes a bathroom feel like a spa?

Room to soak, a shower with more than one spray, natural textures and plenty of light. This bathroom has a freestanding tub, a shower with a rain head and a handheld spray, a stacked stone accent wall and a skylight overhead.

Can a stacked stone wall go inside a shower?

Yes, when it is a tile made for wet areas and set over a waterproofed wall like the rest of the shower. Here the stacked stone-look tile runs from behind the tub into the shower as one continuous accent wall.
