Stone Tile Master Bathroom with a Herringbone Floor

Large stone-look tile in mixed sizes runs from the floor to the ceiling in this master bathroom, around an open shower with no curb and no glass. A long recessed niche spans the shower wall, a floating stone bench runs along the side, and a herringbone tile floor flows from the shower out to a freestanding tub beside the tall window.

The project

How this herringbone floor master bathroom came together

The goal

This master bathroom was designed as one open wet room: a shower without a door, a tub by the window and a single floor that runs through both, all wrapped in the same natural stone look so the room feels quiet and solid.

The challenge

An open shower with no curb only works if the whole floor is pitched so water runs to the drain and not across the room. The tile also had to turn into a long niche, meet the floating bench and frame a tall window without breaking the pattern.

The solution

We tiled the walls from floor to ceiling in large stone-look tile in mixed sizes, laid in an ashlar pattern like cut stone. The floor is a light herringbone tile that runs from the back of the shower to the window with no curb, sloped to the shower drain. One long recessed niche spans the full width of the shower wall, so there is room for every bottle at one height. The shower has a fixed wall head, a handheld spray on its hose and the valve trim on the back wall. A floating stone bench runs along the side wall from the shower toward the tub, giving a place to sit inside the shower and to set towels outside it. A white freestanding tub stands by the tall window.

The result

The finished bathroom reads as a single stone room. The herringbone floor and the wall tile carry from the shower to the window without a break, the niche keeps the walls clear of caddies, and the bench ties the shower and the tub together. Daylight from the window falls across the tub and the textured tile.

Questions

Questions about this project

How does a shower with no curb keep water in?

The floor does the work. A curbless shower floor is sloped toward its drain, so water runs back into the shower instead of out across the room. In this bathroom the herringbone tile runs straight through, so the slope is hidden in one continuous floor.

What is the advantage of one long shower niche?

A niche that spans the whole wall holds every bottle at one easy height and keeps hanging caddies off the shower walls. Here it sits at shoulder height and is lined in the same stone-look tile as the walls, so it blends in.
