How this veined stone master bathroom came together
The goal
This room is defined by one bold material. Instead of a different tile for the shower, the tub and the walls, a single large veined tile runs across every wet surface, so the shower and the tub read as one feature beside the window.
The challenge
Large tiles with strong veining show every misaligned joint, and here the same tile had to turn corners, wrap a tub deck, step down a half wall and frame a niche. The tub also sits tight against the window, so the tile and the filler had to fit around the glass and the sill.
The solution
We tiled the shower from the floor to the ceiling in large gray tile with green and charcoal veining, laid so the veins sweep across the walls in long bands. The same tile caps the half wall between the shower and the tub, covers the tub deck and lines the face of the tub surround. A recessed niche sits in the shower wall for bottles. The shower floor is a dark tile that sets off the lighter walls. All the fixtures are matte black: a wall shower head, a handheld spray on a slide bar and the valve trim in the shower, and a wall-mounted filler at the tub, set under the window so nothing sits on the deck.
The result
The finished bathroom has one strong focal wall where the shower and the tub meet, lit by the window and a skylight overhead. The black fixtures repeat from the shower to the tub, the veining carries across every corner, and the open shower keeps the room feeling large. Outside the wet area, the white square floor tile and the darker painted walls stay quiet, which lets the veined tile and the black fixtures stand out as the main feature of the room.

Questions about this project
Can the same tile cover a shower and a tub surround?
Yes. Using one tile on the shower walls, the half wall, the tub deck and the tub face is what makes this bathroom look built from a single material. It takes careful layout so the veining lines up at the corners and the cut edges stay clean.
Why put the tub filler on the wall?
A wall-mounted filler keeps the tub deck clear and easy to wipe down. In this bathroom it sits under the window in the same matte black as the shower fixtures, so the tub and the shower match. Water also stays off the deck edge, where a deck-mounted spout would otherwise sit.
How much did this project cost?
