Low Platform Deck Replacement in Mukilteo, WA
In early 2020 we took out an aging low deck and its white pergola behind this Mukilteo house and built a new platform deck in its place. The new deck sits just above the ground outside the sliding door, with angled corners and a step that wraps around the front edge, so it can be stepped onto from almost any side. The job photos run from February 10 to March 3, 2020.

How this Mukilteo deck was replaced
The goal
The backyard had an old low deck with a white railing and a pergola over part of it, and the wood had reached the end of its life. The aim was a clean, simple deck at the sliding door that is easy to step onto from the lawn, without the railing and overhead structure of the old one.
The challenge
Everything old had to come out first: the decking, the frame, the railing and the pergola posts. That left a bare, muddy yard in February, and the new deck had to sit low and level right outside the sliding door, close to the ground where good drainage and a solid frame matter most.
The solution
On February 10 and 11, 2020 the old deck and pergola were taken apart and hauled off, and the yard was cleared. By February 28 a new frame of joists and rim boards was in place outside the door. On top of it went a platform deck with angled corners, and a second, lower tier runs around the front edges as a wraparound step, so the deck can be stepped onto from the lawn on three sides.
The result
By March 3, 2020, about three weeks after the first photos, the new deck was built. It sits just below the sliding door, low enough that it needs no railing in the photos, and the angled corners and step give a simple platform some shape. The yard lost the tired pergola and gained a clean, open deck.

Questions about this project
Does a low platform deck need a railing?
This one is built just above the ground outside the sliding door, with a step around the front edge, and the finished photos show no railing. Whether a deck needs one depends on its height above grade, which we check for every deck we plan.
Can you remove an old deck and pergola and build a new deck in the same job?
Yes. Here the old deck, railing and pergola came down on February 10 and 11, 2020, the yard was cleared, and the new frame and deck followed in the same project.
How much did this project cost?
About $10,000. Every project is priced in writing, line by line, for your home.
How do I get a price for replacing my deck?
Book a consultation. We look at the old deck, measure the space and send a written, itemized price for removal and the new deck before work starts. For what moves the price, read Remodeling Pricing Guide for Seattle and Bellevue, WA.
