Vessel Sink and Dark Tile Shower Bathroom Remodel

In this 2022 remodel a builder-grade bathroom with a tub, a shower curtain and a tile-topped vanity became a modern room in black, white and gray. The tub gave way to a walk-in shower in large dark stone-look tile behind a glass door. A white vanity now holds a gray stone-look vessel sink and a black faucet under a lit mirror, and large white hexagon tile covers the floor.

How this vessel sink bathroom came together

The goal

Before the remodel, the room was a standard tub and shower behind a striped curtain, a wood vanity with a white tile counter and a drop-in sink, a large plain mirror, beige walls and wire shelving above the toilet. The goal was a walk-in shower and a cleaner, more modern look in the same footprint.

The challenge

The tub sat in an alcove along one wall, with the vanity opposite and the toilet at the back, so there was no room to spread out. A walk-in shower had to fit inside the old tub alcove, and every new piece had to line up along the same two walls without blocking the door.

The solution

Our photos show the old room on January 17, 2022, and by February 7 the tub was gone and the new shower walls were going up in large dark stone-look tile, set with leveling clips to keep the faces flat, with a long niche on the back wall and a hexagon mosaic on the shower floor. The finished shower is closed in by a glass door with a black handle. Across from it, a solid white vanity with a dark tile backsplash carries a gray stone-look vessel sink and a black faucet, under a mirror framed in light. The toilet sits in its alcove at the back, large white hexagon tile covers the floor, and recessed lights sit in the tray ceiling beside the exhaust fan.

The result

The bathroom now reads in three tones: dark tile in the shower, white everywhere else and black in the hardware. The glass door keeps the shower open to the room where the curtain used to close it off, and the lit mirror and white floor make the room brighter than the beige original.

Questions

Questions about this project

Can a bathtub be replaced with a walk-in shower?

Yes. In this bathroom the tub came out of its alcove and a walk-in shower was built in the same space, with dark tile walls, a long niche, a hexagon mosaic floor and a glass door in place of the curtain.

Is a vessel sink practical for an everyday bathroom?

It can be, with the faucet set to match. Here the gray vessel sink sits on a wide white vanity top with a tall black faucet mounted behind it, so the spout clears the rim of the bowl.

How much did this project cost?
