Paver Driveway and Front Walk in Camarillo, CA

This Camarillo front yard traded a strip of tired lawn for pavers in November 2018. A wider paver apron now runs beside the concrete driveway, and a curved paver walk leads from the sidewalk to the arched front porch. Every paved edge is framed by a darker red border, and the lawn and planting beds that remain follow the new curves.

The project

How this Camarillo front yard came together

The goal

The house had a plain concrete driveway and a lawn that ran right up to it, with no paved route from the sidewalk to the front door. The project added paved width beside the driveway and a proper walk to the arched porch, while keeping a green strip along the street.

The challenge

The new paving had to fit around what was staying: the existing driveway slab, the planting bed under the front windows and the lawn by the curb. That meant cutting the lawn back along clean lines, digging out only where pavers would go, and keeping the curves of the walk smooth enough to read as one shape.

The solution

In early November the crew stripped the lawn back to soil along the driveway, dug out the strip beside it for the paver apron and cut the route of the walk out of the lawn from the sidewalk. Pavers in a reddish tone were laid as a wide apron along the driveway and as a curving walk that leaves the sidewalk, bends past the lawn and finishes at the porch steps. A darker red border course frames every edge, so the paving reads as one designed piece and the lawn and beds have a crisp line to grow against.

The result

By November 21, 2018 the front yard had a paved route from the street to the front door and extra width beside the driveway, with lawn and planting that follow the new curves. The border ties the apron and the walk together, and the house now has a clear, welcoming approach.

Questions

Questions about this project

Can pavers be added beside an existing concrete driveway?

Yes. On this Camarillo job the original concrete driveway stayed in place and a paver apron was laid along one side of it. A border course finishes the edge where the pavers meet the lawn, so the two surfaces sit side by side as one wider approach.

Why use a border course around a paver walk?

A border in a contrasting color holds the outline of the paving and gives the lawn and planting beds a clean edge. Here the darker red border runs around the apron and the curved walk, which is what makes the two read as one design in the after photos.
