Front and Back Yard Turf Landscaping in Corona, CA

Both yards of this Corona home were relandscaped in September 2018. Artificial turf replaced the grass in front and in back, concrete curbing now traces the lawn edges in smooth curves, and gravel planting beds with low shrubs fill the spaces between the lawn, the driveway and the house. The work ran from the first dig on September 5 to finished turf on September 25.

The project

How these Corona yards came together

The goal

The house had grass in front and a grass lawn in back beside the covered porch. The project replaced both with artificial turf and gave the front yard defined beds and edges, so the lawns hold their color and the planting has room of its own.

The challenge

Two yards meant two different jobs. The front had to be dug out and reshaped around the driveway, the walk and the house corners. The back yard was a long strip between the porch and a brick planter, where the turf had to meet a paver path and the porch steps with clean edges and no low spots.

The solution

The crew dug out the front yard on September 5 and the back lawn soon after. Both areas were leveled and covered with a compacted gravel base by mid September; in back, the base runs between the brick planter and the porch. In front, concrete curbing was run in long curves to separate the lawn from gravel planting beds of white and red rock, set with low shrubs. Artificial turf was then cut and fitted inside the curbing in front and from the porch to the brick planter in back. The back yard turf went down last, fitted along the path by the porch.

The result

By September 25, 2018 both yards were finished. The front reads as a green lawn framed by smooth gray curbs with tidy rock beds against the house, and the back yard is an even turf surface from the porch to the planter. The grass, the mud and the mowing are gone from both.

Questions

Questions about this project

What goes under artificial turf?

On this Corona job the old grass and soil were dug out and replaced with a leveled, compacted gravel base before any turf went down. The photos from mid September show that base in the back yard, running from the porch to the brick planter.

Why add concrete curbing around a turf lawn?

Curbing gives the turf a fixed edge and keeps the rock beds from spreading into the lawn. Here it runs in long curves along the driveway and the house, so the front yard reads as shaped lawn and planting beds instead of one flat surface.
