Backyard Turf, Patio and Cedar Fence Remodel in Seattle, WA

We turned an overgrown Seattle back yard and its weedy side yards into a low-care outdoor space in the fall of 2021. The old weathered fences came down and new cedar board fences went up on every side. The back yard got a patio of large square gray slabs, a block wall at the foot of the old rock wall and artificial turf, and the turf continues down one side yard.

The project

How this Seattle backyard came together

The goal

The yard had space but no use. Weeds filled the side yards, the grass in back was patchy, and the fences had weathered gray. The goal was a yard that looks good all year and needs little upkeep: clean fences, a hard patio for seating and turf where the grass had struggled.

The challenge

Almost nothing could stay. The back yard had to be cleared and regraded before anything new could be built, and the side yards are narrow strips between the house and the property line where every load of material came in by hand and wheelbarrow. The old rock wall at the back also had to be kept and met cleanly by the new work.

The solution

We cleared the yard by machine and graded it, then replaced the old fences with new cedar board fences along the back and both sides. In the back, a patio of large square gray slabs went down, with a stacked block course along the foot of the old rock wall. Artificial turf was rolled out around the patio and carried down one side yard, and the other side yard and the strip by the driveway were finished in gravel.

The result

The first photos were taken on September 21, 2021 and the finished yard on November 5, 2021. The back yard now has a level slab patio with room for outdoor seating, turf that stays green without mowing, and new cedar on every fence line, and the side yards are clean paths instead of weed strips.

Questions

Questions about this project

Why artificial turf instead of new grass?

Turf stays green without mowing or watering, and it does well in shaded strips where grass struggles, like the side yard here. In this yard it fills the space around the slab patio and runs down one side of the house.

Can new fences go in at the same time as the yard work?

Yes, and it is the better order. Here the old fences came out while the yard was being cleared, and the new cedar fences were up before the patio and turf went in, so nothing new was walked on or damaged.

How much did this project cost?
